Soles4Soles Montreal - Organizers’ shoe drive a perfect fit

By Joel Ceausu - The Suburban

People are always being told to walk a mile in the other guy’s shoes, but what if the other guy has no shoes?

That’s the reality for much of the planet. In fact, some reports pet it at 300 million children going barefoot every day. As spring cleaning kicks into high gear, it puts it in perspective, particularly when eyeing a closet teeming with dozens of pairs.

“Shoes don’t judge you,” says professional organizer Pat Auchinleck. “When you gain 10 pounds they still look great; that’s why many women have so many pairs.” Now Auchinleck and her colleagues Renée Blanchette and Dorothy Spevack want your shoes. The three are leading a Montreal shoe drive to benefit the poor, here at home and in the developing world.

Spevack discovered the Soles4Souls organization, which has collected and delivered more than 15 million pairs of new and used shoes in more than 127 countries over five years. “I read about their work and about the children who have no shoes and cannot go to school because the school requires they wear shoes,” she told The Suburban.

From Haiti to Africa, from Mexico to Guatemala, the shoes benefit many barefoot kids and adults living a high risk scavenger’s existence, roaming garbage dumps, fields and slums looking for food or household items. Some of the most dangerous conditions of going barefoot are the risk of puncture wounds, cuts, scrapes, burns, serious infections, amputations and even death.

“I read about two large Soles4Souls shoe drives in Kelowna, B.C. that collected about 100,000 pairs,” recalls Spevack. Another drive is happening next month in Kelowna and in Ottawa, and she thought it was time for Montreal to step in, approaching fellow members of Professional Organizers in Canada’s Montreal Chapter last October, who were keen on the idea.

Working with clients to reduce clutter, which often includes surplus footwear, “it was a no-brainer for us,” says Auchinleck. “It makes sense of what we do as professional organizers: It’s always easier to get someone to let go of something if someone can really use it.” Blanchette agrees: “What motivates us is that we see lots of shoes and they are good. This has definite purpose as people are in need of them.”

The ladies are looking for new and gently used shoes, boots and sandals, tied or bundled together. “We’re hoping for 30,000 pairs,” says Spevack, “a thousand a day throughout April.” There are 27 drop-off points in and around the city, including Running Room stores, Dawson College, Royal West Academy, Purolator Vaudreuil and more.

The mounting piles of footwear are stored courtesy of Sentinel Storage and at least 20 percent will go to local organizations Dans La Rue and the Patricia Mackenzie Pavilion at the Old Brewery Mission. The balance will be shipped to Ottawa then Nevada for distribution overseas.

The campaign officially kicks off a Foot Solutions in Westmount this Saturday, when organizers encourage all Montrealers - and Suburban readers - to help change the world, one pair at a time.

McGill Athletics and Recreation is donating to Soles4Souls Montreal for April 2012

Soles4Souls Canada is proud to announce that the McGill Athletics and Recreation with their Reuse, Resole, Rerun has joined forces with Soles4Souls Montreal in April 2012.

When it comes to the environment, small initiatives can make a big impact – especially if everyone does their part. That’s exactly what McGill Athletics and Recreation had in mind when it teamed up with a group of McGill students from an environmental management class to implement a shoe recycling initiative. Working on the premise that most athletes have a supply of worn or outdated athletic shoes sitting in their closet, the idea was to stop these shoes from finding their way into a landfill.

The Reuse, Resole, Rerun program collects unwanted athletics shoes from the McGill community and local athletic groups and helps them find a new life somewhere else.

The campaign is ongoing with special “blue boxes” tailored to accept gently used and worn out shoes. The receptacles can be found at the McGill Sports Centre and are easily accessible to all gym users. “We think it’s cool that a school project has translated into a new initiative,” said April Lecato, a third-year Arts student with a major in Environmental Science.

“When it comes to the environment, people talk a good game, but this program actually has a chance to make a difference.”

Soles 4 Souls Montreal – What To Do With Your Gently Used Shoes

As posted on MontrealMom.com

It’s time for spring cleaning and as we weed out the things that need to go, shoes (and boots) are high up on the list, especially those worn by our kids as they are outgrown SO quickly, often before they have really been ‘worn’. As for the adults, we have pairs that remain barely touched as we’ve decided are uncomfortable for us.

We have others that we’ve worn a few times but they no longer fit with our style. What to do with all of these shoes?  It’s such a shame, we think to ourselves.  But the thing is- it doesn’t have to be. These shoes still have life in them…literally.  Soles 4 Souls is a charitable organization that collects new & gently used footwear to support micro-business efforts to eradicate poverty as well as to provide footwear to disaster victims.   These shoes can find happy homes on the feet of children and adults across the globe.

Founder Wayne Elsey was watching TV in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami that hit Southeast Asia, and saw a picture of a single shoe washing up on the beach. Feeling like he just needed to do something, he made a few calls to some other executives in the footwear industry which resulted in the donation of a quarter of a million shoes to victims in the devastated countries.  The idea for Soles 4 Souls was born.

The reason I am writing about this today is that as we set upon our course of spring cleaning, the Montreal Chapter of Professional Organizers In Canada (POC) is organizing Quebec’s 1st shoe drive for Soles 4 Soles during the month of April!

Some of the 2012 Montreal footwear collected will be donated locally to: Dans La Rue, Old Brewery Mission – Patricia Mackenzie Womens’ Pavilion.

There will be a kick-off event on Saturday, March 31st from 10 AM to 5 PM at Foot Solutions (368 Victoria Avenue in Westmount – H3Z 2N4) After launch day, new & gently used footwear can be dropped off at any of the following locations throughout the month of April:

SOLES 4 SOULS Montreal - Great use for old shoes

Wondering what to do with your ever-growing collection of old shoes? The Professional Organizers in Canada (POC) will be launching the 2012 Soles 4 Souls shoe collection at Foot Solutions at 368 Victoria Avenue in Westmount (near Sherbrooke St. W.) on Saturday March 31st from 10am - 5pm.

Soles 4 Souls is a Tennessee-Based charity that sprung up after the 2004 tsunami in Asia and the 2005 Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. The group distributes used shoes to needy families both locally and in different countries worldwide.

After the March 331 launch, the shoe collection will continue all through April at each of the drop-off points listed below (unless otherwise indicated): Charles River in Senneville; Coop La Maison Verte (Earth Day Sun. April 22 only); Dawson College; Foot Solutions; Greene Ave. Community Centre; Rideau Memorial Gardens Running Room. (for complete list, addresses -  tel. below)

POC is a non profit group that aims to develop professional organizing through creating awareness of the industry amongst the public and to provide its members with support by giving them the access to the tools, training, and resources to build their own businesses.

The Montreal POC chapter describes the services its members offer to the public as: “who assist clients with the de-cluttering and reorganization of all areas of their home from basement to attic - including the home office. From small or home-based businesses to companies and corporations, we have trained Professional Organizers who can assist businesses with their organizing needs. We also provide support and organizing services to people who are moving or downsizing into a smaller home or a senior/retirement residence. We work with people who face special challenges including chronic disorganization, ADD/ADHD and hoarding.”

Local POC treasurer Pat Auchinleck describes the Soles4Souls initiative as an added impetus for people to discard their old shoes. “It always helps when we know what we are giving away is going to a worthy cause. “ POC Montreal: 514-487-9675 / 514-793-3778.
